What:
Diavolo uses extremely physical and athletic work. Performers must have strong background in modern dance technique, contact improvisation, and some gymnastic and/or acrobatic ability. Dancers must not be afraid of heights.
All choreography by Jacques Heim, Artistic Director, in collaberation with the company.

CLASSES/WORKSHOPS

Diavolo Spring Workshop
Come receive professional training in partnering skills, performance techniques, and creation. Under the guidance of Company Members, students will both learn movement and create their own Duet on our Doors. The workshop will culminate in an informal peer performance. Dancers will receive constructive critiques on choreography and be challenged in their presentation. Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to grow as a choreographer and performer! This workshop is open to dancers of all levels.

Daily Schedule: TH - SUN: 5pm to 7pm – Diavolo Technique/Skills An athletic modern technique class combining partnering, improvisation, and gymnastics. Classes will be taught by Rebecca Greenbaum and Ken Arrata. See Website for teacher bios.
TH - SUN: 7pm to 9pm - Diavolo Composition/Performance Class Students will learn Company Rep on the Doors and gain knowledge on the creation process using Structures. This class will develop into a short informal performance.
TH- SUN: 9:30pm – 10pm – Diavolo Conditioning Class Through our conditioning classes you learn new ways to train yourself year round and be prepared for that next audition. This class serves to strengthen your upper body and core and increase your flexibility.
Diavolo Summer Intensives

Session One: July 21st – August 2nd, 2008 “THE WHEEL”
Calling all Beginning and Intermediate performers interested in gaining my professional dance experience! Take two weeks to immerse yourself into the day and life of a Diavolo Dancer and learn the discipline of conditioning, training, and risk-taking.
Come spend a warm summer in the heart of Los Angeles basking in the sun by day and training with Diavolo Company Members by night. Expect to expand your movement vocabulary, learn falling and flying techniques, grow physical strength, and be trained on our Wheel. This workshop will culminate in an evening performance. Friends and family are welcome!

Session Two: August 4th – August 16th “TRAJECTOIRE”
Calling all Diavolo Vets! If you have experienced one or more of our workshops and are looking to deepen your understanding in our technique, we want you!
Come train for two weeks with 15 other actors, dancers, and performers on Trajectoire. Be stretched and strengthened each day in our rigorous technique/conditioning classes followed by in-depth instruction of our repertoire. Then learn how to fly as Diavolo Company Members set a performance piece on you and your fellow company mates. Finally, finish each evening off with intense conditioning upper and lower body, core, and cardio. The workshop will culminate in an evening performance. Friends and family are welcome! We hope you are ready to be challenged and to learn what life is like behind the scenes of a Professional Dance Company.
Please note that due to the level of session one Diavolo will only be accepting applicants who have had past training through workshops, classes, and intensives. See our March weekend workshop for training or sign up for Session One.

Daily Schedule:
M-F: 4pm to 6pm – Diavolo Technique/Skills
A rigorous modern based technique class combining contact improvisation, gymnastics, partnering, lifts and flying. All classes are taught by Diavolo Company Members and will vary in technique depending on the instructor’s background and training. See Website for teacher bios.
M-F: 6pm to 9pm - Diavolo Rep/Composition Class
Students will work and create on and around Diavolo’s World-famous architectural set pieces. The Composition Classes will culminate in an evening of performance. Friends and Family are welcome!
Saturday, August 2nd , August 16th 1pm to 3:00pm - Final Technique Class 3:00pm to 5:00pm – Final Rep Class 5:00pm – 7:00pm - Diavolo Dinner 8: 00pm – 9: 00pm- Performance
Diavolo will provide dinner for all participants to celebrate the culmination of the intensive. In attendance will be senior Diavolo Staff as well as intensive instructors. During the dinner, instructors, participants, and Diavolo Staff will debrief on the intensive. In addition, instructors and staff will offer guidance on each participants “next step”.

Requirements:
You must be 16 or older, with some background in modern dance, and some experience in either gymnastics, acrobatics, aerial arts, martial arts, and the like. Participants are generally professionals, or dancers on a dance track at the college, or performing arts high school level, with a desire to focus on dance as a career. Participants should not be afraid of heights. An explanation of the components of the intensive follows:
Diavolo Technique
This rigorous technique class is modern based, and combines elements of contact improvisation, gymnastics, partnering and lifting. At its foundation will be the Diavolo core principles of trust, teamwork and individual expression.
Diavolo Skills/Dance Conditioning
Diavolo Skills will teach participants specific principles and technique unique to Diavolo - flying and falling exercises, principles of safe catching, and weight bearing counter-balance exercises, and further exploration of partnering.
Dance Conditioning addresses: 1) Body Toning, 2) Injury Prevention, 3) Partner Stretching and 4) Relaxation Exercises.
Diavolo Repertory
In rep class, students will deal directly with one of Diavolo’s signature architectural set pieces, while learning Diavolo rep for that structure. Working with the set piece is a one of a kind experience that will challenge the student’s creative and physical abilities.

General Information All Diavolo Intensives are an opportunity for performers/students to experience in-depth training in our ultra athletic dance style. This intensive is directed towards dancers who have not previously taken a workshop with Diavolo and are interested in challenging their skills in gymnastics, acting, partnering, flying and falling techniques. The intensive will be taught by the Diavolo Associate Artistic Director and Diavolo company members.
Requirements:
You must be 16 or older, with some background in modern dance, and some experience in either gymnastics, acrobatics, aerial arts, martial arts, and the like. Participants are generally professionals, or dancers on a dance track at the college, or performing arts high school level, with a desire to focus on dance as a career. This is a beginner/intermediate intensive, but advanced dancers will also expand their skill level in combining dance with other ultra athletic movement. Participants should not be afraid of heights. An explanation of the components of the intensive follows.

Once you enter into our beautiful space at the Brewery Arts Complex, you will no longer be considered a "student." You will be expected to work hard, pay attention, take notes, and treat this experience as if you are a newly hired member of Diavolo Dance Theater. What we offer in this Intensive is a truly unique opportunity to work, dance and experience what it’s like to be a real Diavolo dancer. You’ll sweat, you’ll be sore, but you’ll accomplish things you never thought possible. You’ll push yourself to new heights and have the most amazing experience!
